Reenergizing Communities with Wind

by Lisa Diggs

In response to Governor Granholm’s recent signing into law of an energy package that requires utilities to generate 10 percent of their power from renewable sources by 2015, wind power companies are prospecting for new sites in communities to locate wind turbines.

Michigan’s growth in wind energy is dependent on community adoption of the necessary wind siting laws, so Michigan Citizen Planner is offering a “What You Need to Know about Wind Energy Siting and Policy Issues” workshop at nine locations throughout Michigan during December 2008.

Sponsored by Michigan Farm Bureau and Michigan State University, the 3½-hour workshops will provide planning and zoning officials, local leaders, concerned citizens, farmers and landowners the tools and resources necessary to create and implement a strategic plan for wind energy development in their communities.  Topics include:
  • Current status of wind energy development in Michigan
  • Important policy guidelines and new legislation
  • Siting and zoning guidelines for wind development
  • Key steps to develop and implement local zoning regulations
  • Essential resources and Michigan examples
Citizen Planner is an MSU Extension program within the MSU Land Policy Institute.  It was established in 2002 to address the basic education needs of citizens appointed to serve on local land use planning commissions.  It seeks to foster a greater awareness of land use through education of locally appointed and elected officials, zoning board members, and concerned citizens.

The workshops will be held from 6pm-9:30pm on the following dates at the following locations:

March 18, 2009 - Oakland County Executive Offices, Waterford
March 19, 2009 - Clarion Hotel, Romulus
March 24, 2009 - Tawas Bay Beach Resort, East Tawas
March 30, 2009 - St. Clair County Building, Port Huron
March 31, 2009 - MSUE - Lenawee County, Adrian
April 1, 2009 - The James B. Henry Center, East Lansing
