Michigan’s reputation for beer production is rising faster than the yeast used to make the tasty froths. The state now ranks #5 in the nation in terms of its overall number of breweries, microbreweries, and brewpubs. In fact, this thriving industry contributes over $24 million in wages with a total economic contribution of more than $133 million.
The sales growth is no doubt spurred by the caliber of the products. Evidence of that quality can be found by sampling and by reviewing the impressive results of many regional, national, and international beer competitions.
In a recent example, twenty Michigan breweries collectively snagged 51 medals at the 2011 World Expo of Beer Competition, April 30th in Frankenmuth. Overall, there were 554 entries from around the world in 29 categories.
For true beer connoisseurs, though, the proof is in the tasting. Fortunately many of the beers entered in that competition will be available for sampling at the World Expo of Beer, May 20th-21st, at Heritage Park in Frankenmuth.
In its sixteenth year, this celebration of beer is a ton of fun, while simultaneously raising thousands of dollars for local charities. Fest-goers will even have the opportunity to vote on their favorite brew for the coveted "People’s Choice" award.
Visitors will also able to easily identify the Michigan brewers on site by looking for the Buy Michigan Now logo on their vendor booths.
The World Expo of Beer festival runs from 5-10pm on Friday, May 20th and 3-10pm on Saturday, May 21st. For more information, visit
