Laughing Our Way to a New Detroit

by Lisa Diggs

The past few years in Detroit politics have been rough on locals to say the least, so if laughter is indeed the best medicine, then the Andiamo Novi Theatre is prescribing us all a big dose via their new revue Kwame A River 2: The Wrath of Conyers.

This show follows the critically-acclaimed success of an earlier production entitled Kwame A River: The Chronicles of Detroit's Hip Hop Mayor. Both have been crafted by the comedic mind of writer/director Marc Warzecha, who grew up in Dearborn Heights and now resides in Los Angeles. The talented native has appeared on popular television comedies like MAD TV and Reno 911 and received many honors in his career including two Joseph Jefferson nominations for Best Director.

Warzecha says he’s always excited to come home and describes the Detroit theatrical community as “small in size, but mighty in talent”, as exemplified by his entirely local cast. Performers include Amise from Saginaw, Jamaal Hines of Farmington Hills, Oak Park’s Jason Echols, and Detroit’s own Sharon Brooks, Ava Rodgers and Renell White.

The current revue Kwame A River 2: The Wrath of Conyers is an uproarious satire that picks up and boldly goes where the first left off.  Former Detroit Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, is out of jail and in exile in Texas. In his absence the unpredictable Monica Conyers has become President of the Detroit City Council. Warzecha got his inspiration for both scripts through extensive factual research of what has transpired in recent times.

Those of us who have closely followed the political landscape over the past few years in Detroit, know that some actual events felt more like comedy sketches than reality, even as they happened. Rest assured the show tackles those by hilariously chronicling Monica's tenure as head of Detroit City Council and comically displays raucous council wars, Cobo contracts, and even feuds with 8th graders. Warzecha also lets his imagination run wild and includes Monica's secret therapy session with Dr. Phil and even an unlikely and passionate affair with Ken Cockrel Jr.

This is show may be especially fun for metro Detroiters as dozens of local characters are depicted in sketches and songs, including Kwame and Carilta Kilpatrick, Dennis Archer, Coleman A. Young, Gov. Jennifer Granholm, George W. Bush, Jeff Daniels, Martha Reeves, Ken Cockrel Jr., Mel Farr Superstar, Kid Rock, Aretha Franklin, Geoffrey Feiger, Ted Nugent, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, L. Brooks Patterson, The Sam Bernstein family, and the entire unpredictable Detroit City Council.

The Andiamo Novi Theatre is formerly known as Second City Novi and is located at 42705 Grand River Avenue in Novi.
