Here's the Scoop on Moomers

by Lisa Diggs

Moomers Ice Cream, one of the best kept secrets in Michigan, is finally getting known across the country.  Nestled back off of N. Long Lake Road in Traverse City, Moomers was recently voted the "Best Scoop in America"  by viewers of ABC's Good Morning America

The Plummer family, owners of the store and neighboring dairy farm, appeared live on GMA Weekend to celebrate, along with legions of their loyal fans and long time customer, Lisa Vidor, who nominated the shop for the honor.  Vidor said, "Moomers exemplifies small town America and Bob & Nancy Plummer and their family have just stood out in this community, they've helped lots of people, and they make the best ice cream in the world."

How good is the ice cream?  Well, with a slogan like "From the cow to the cone", it doesn't take long to realize that Moomers Ice Cream is the freshest of the fresh.  Set on the Plummer family farm, the shop is known for its fine ingredients, especially those harvested from the "Cherry Capital of the World."   Moomers makes 100 different flavors, with a variety of 20 available every day.  Some of the more unique flavors include: Amaretto Cherry, Bear Paw, Carrot Cake, Chocolate Cabernet, Ginger Snap, Mr. Monkey Tail, and Play Dough.  The store's signature flavor is Cherries Moobilee, a tantalizing combination of black cherry flavored ice cream with chunks of locally grown sweet black and tart red cherries, a chocolate fudge swirl, and hunks of homemade brownies.

Ice cream isn't the only treat at Moomers either.  Kids also love the chance to sit on the deck and watch the cows graze in the pasture down below.  There's extra special excitement when a calf appears on the scene, like Marysol, named after GMA Weekend Correspondent, Marysol Castro , who visited the farm during the America's Best Scoop competition, and challenged the family to name a calf after her if they won.

Other interested visitors may arrange field trips for groups of twelve or more up until October 31st.  Reservations are required (231-941-4122).  The tour runs approximately 90 minutes and includes a wagon ride through the fields, learning how the cows are fed and milked, petting the calves, discovering how the ice cream is made, and of course a delicious cup or cone of the flavor of your choice.

For those who visit the north, but are unable to work a trip to Moomers into the journey, you'll be happy to know that many stores and restaurants in the area now carry  an assortment of Moomers Homemade Ice Cream for your palate's delight.

The ice cream was rich, creamy and the flavor excellent. Watching the "cows come home" on the adjacent balcony was just an added treat. Great fun!!
