Final Four and So Much More

by Lisa Diggs

March Madness has brought us an exciting April finale in the D, featuring our own beloved Spartans!  Even if you aren't lucky enough to have tickets to the big event, there is still a ton of fun to be had.  If hoops are not your cup of tea, try a glass of vino in honor of Michigan Wine Month, or a host of other events that will help us finally welcome spring.

NCAA®  Final Four – April 3-6
Watch these talented athletes practice on the eve of the biggest games of their lives at Ford Field on April 3rd and stick around for a collegiate all-star game. Venture over to Cobo Center throughout the weekend for Hoops City, a compilation of basketball competitions, clinics, performances, photo ops, prizes, autograph sessions, surprise appearances and much more. Don’t leave town without taking in the riverfront for a four-day musical event and gigantic pep rally that’s like no other.

If you can't make it to Detroit, how about East Lansing?  Revel in the excitement at MSU's home court.  The Breslin Center on the campus of MSU is offering free admission and parking to watch the game on their jumbo screens.  Doors open at 5PM on Saturday.

Michigan International Wine Expo – April 3-4
Whether you consider yourself a novice or a connoisseur, this expo is sure to be a unique wine and gourmet food experience, featuring wine tasting and seminars along with sampling from the area's premier restaurants. Be sure to check out offerings from some of Michigan’s finest wineries including Burgdorf's, Chateau Chantal, Sandhill Crane, and Pentamere.

Betty Ford Birthday Celebration – April 7-8
Mrs. Ford is turning 91 and the presidential museum in Grand Rapids is throwing a party.  Join former White House social secretaries, Bess Abell, Maria Downs, and Laurie Firestone as they discuss the social side of the nation's executive mansion at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, April 7th.  Then the gifts are for you, as the museum welcomes visitors for FREE all day on Wednesday, and serves up birthday cake to the first 750 revelers.  To learn more about the Gerald R. National Trout Festival – April 22-26
The last Saturday in April means one thing to storytellers and anglers alike--it's the start of trout season, and Kalkaska is THE place to be. Catch some spring fever with a parade, cooking contest, classic-car show, crafts and flea markets, and enjoy the crowning of the Trout King and Queen. Make no mistake though, it’s the fishing that hooks visitors to this 73-year tradition in the nation's trout capital.

Blossomtime Festival – April 26-May 2
Originally started as a means of attracting tourists from Chicago to southwestern Michigan, this agricultural celebration in Benton Harbor & St. Joseph is the state’s oldest and largest multi-community festival. Come for the kickoff Blessing of the Blossoms ceremony and then take a self-guided tour through blossoming orchards, or visit the host communities for the youth parade, carnival and 5K Run for the Buds.  The week culminates in the two-hour Grand Floral Parade, which winds through the neighboring Lake Michigan shore towns on Saturday May 2nd.

April is full of wine events at restaurants and vineyards around the state. For details on a wide variety of choices, visit our friends at www.MichiganWines.com.
