Fenton's Laundry Taps Only Michigan Brews

by Lisa Diggs

The French Laundry Café & Market in Fenton recently announced that from now on they will be pouring exclusively Michigan draft beer.

According to bartender, Jon Foley, the restaurant has nine pulls on tap and will be rotating them to feature a variety of Michigan-crafted brews.

Foley says the rotating beers will span the spectrum of styles, coming from a variety of Michigan breweries including Arbor BrewingAtwater, Founders, and Michigan Brewing Company to name just a few.

This unusually named restaurant is nestled in downtown Fenton, in what was formerly a laundry building. Owner Mark Hamel spent a year studying in Paris during his college career at Michigan State University. He had long planned to open a restaurant and says he wanted something with a French name, but not necessarily a French-influenced menu. Once he purchased the building in 1997, The French Laundry was born.

The charming restaurant features chiefly American fare, and has an established history of featuring other Michigan products. In addition to local produce, many menu items include products from Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor and American Spoon of Petoskey, for example.

According to employees the response to the Michigan beers on tap has been great so far, and the word is spreading. The news even drew Southfield's Lynne Schreiber and a friend to make the trek north to Fenton to discover more about this unique place.

“I heard that they were serving only Michigan beers on tap, and I liked that support for buying locally, so we decided to check it out”, explained Schreiber. “The food was magnificent and we really enjoyed ourselves.”

The Laundry, as it’s affectionately known, serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week – including a kids’ menu and a full catering menu. Classes, focused on a variety of food and beverage themes, are also offered on a regular basis.

Seating is available inside or out. There’s a casual deli-style setting that showcases fresh breads, pastries, and desserts as well as a dining room with a fully stocked bar, including those Michigan brews on tap.

Wonderful. I have been wanting to get to The Laundry for years. May I suggest a link to your restaurant be added to this article?
