For most Americans, celebrating Cinco de Mayo is less about the historic relevance of Mexico's victory over the French in 1862, and more about savoring the spicy flavors of Mexico. No fiesta would be complete without spectacular salsa. Since Michigan borders our colder North American neighbor, you might be surprised to discover what a hot trend locally made salsa has become. One element that is not a surprise, given our incredible propensity for growing produce, is that the most common theme found in Michigan-made salsa is fresh ingredients. Here are some of our favorite finds:
Garden Fresh Gourmet
This little company that could, not only shows that Michigan is making salsa, it proves, that some of the nation’s best selling and best tasting is being produced here. Vice President Dave Zilko travels the country representing the brand, and says he is constantly surprising people when he tells them the company is in the Detroit area. “My favorite comment so far is ‘You must’ve gotten lost coming out of Texas.’”
Garden Fresh Gourmet boasts the best selling fresh salsa in the country with its popular, Jack’s Special, and has cornered 21% of the fresh salsa market share nationwide. They currently produce twenty five different salsa varieties along with a vast line of tortilla chips to compliment the different flavors. Among the more unique awaiting your discovery are Roasted Garlic & Green Onion, Mango Peach, and Dave Zilko’s personal favorite, Artichoke Garlic.
Little Diablo Salsa
The evolution of a family recipe originating nearly twenty years ago, Little Diablo Salsa is not just a product, but a passion, for sisters Angela Plachta and Lisa Ruggirello. Crediting their mother with a lifetime of inspiration to use the freshest and finest ingredients possible, the sisters have created a mild, medium, and hot version for a variety of palettes. They claim, “Our salsa is so unique, so tasty, that you’ll fall in love with your first bite.”
Global Warming Salsa
Dan Houston has always had a love for chili peppers and for fitness. In an attempt to convince clients of his Houston Fitness Consultants business that eating more vegetables could be as tasty as it is healthy, Dan began to bring homemade salsa into the center. After a ton of requests from would-be customers, he and his wife, Cherie, finally decided to bottle the stuff. They currently sell a selection of mild, medium and hot, with new variations on the way. Dan says he spent a lot of extra time on his spicy creations to ensure that the “kick” hits the taster in the back of the throat, rather than on the tongue, so that all of the flavors can truly be savored.
Cherry Republic
The talented folks at Cherry Republic can create nearly anything out of the state’s glorious cherries, but salsa? You bet. In fact, their Original Cherry Salsa (formerly labeled hot), has been their best selling product for years. It’s a unique blend of the sweetness of cherries and the heat of jalapeno peppers, combined with tomatoes and other spices. This popular line now also includes a mild and hot rendition.
Brownwood Farms
If you thought cherries in your salsa sounded unique, then imagine adding raspberries as well. Brownwood Farms has created a tantalizing salsa blend that includes both these fine fruits. The result is not only satisfying with tortilla chips, but can make a great addition to a turkey sandwich or chicken fajitas. Cherry and Cherry Jalapeno salsas are also available.
Throw yourself a fiesta any time, all year long, and bring some Michigan salsa along.
