A Spartan in Hollywood

by Courtney Curran

A few weeks ago we told you about Jillian Granz, a Michigan State University apparel and textile design senior who was named the grand prize winner of the “Red Carpet, Green Dress” competition. Since then, Jillian has been to L.A. and back, met Mr. and Mrs. James Cameron and saw her dress design come to life. Here’s what Jillian had to say about her trip:

Q: Have you ever been to L.A. before? If not, was it what you expected? Any surprises?

A: I have never been to L.A. before so I really wasn't expecting anything in particular. L.A. was really fun and I enjoyed my stay there. I was slightly surprised at how nice people were.

Q: As part of the prize package, you got to sit in on Mrs. Cameron’s dress fitting. What was it like?

A: The fitting was interesting. I had never been to a real fitting before so I got a few ideas on how those typically go. It was fun working with the designer and her team.

Q: You also got to meet Mrs. Cameron’s husband, Avatar director James Cameron. How did that go?

A: Both of the Camerons’ are so nice and so welcoming. I was really surprised at how kind and down to earth they were. The first time I met Jim was right before he was going out on the Red Carpet so that was really interesting. He was really nice and I enjoyed spending time with them.

Q: The competition served as a fund raiser for MUSE Elementary, the school founded by Mrs. Cameron. Part of your trip to L.A. included a tour of the alternative school. What was the school like? Was it different than the elementary school you attended?

A: MUSE Elementary was really different from any school I have been to before. It was interesting to see and the kids that go there are really impressive with what they know. It was nothing like I would have expected and it was a good experience to see a different way to teach. The kids learn about what they are interested in and follow that program until they are no longer interested and move on. After visiting the school I can fully understand and appreciate what the contest was all about.

Q: What is it like finally seeing your design come to life? Did it turn out how you imagined or was there anything you would have done differently?

A: The dress turned out absolutely beautiful and I really could not have asked for it to turn out better. It looked exactly how I had imagined but since I was in talks with Suzy and the designer, Deb Scott, I sort of knew what to expect.

Jillian Granz will be graduating from Michigan State University with a major in Apparel & Textile Design in May 2010. For more information about the event or MUSE Elementary visit www.redcarpetgreendress.com.
