Day one of the Buy Michigan Now Festival is themed Going Green in the Eco-Peninsula and will examine the opportunities that a greener economy presents for the state.

Michigan is positioning itself to emerge as a leader in the fields of renewable energy, alternative fuels, and protecting our environment. Events on Monday will explore the potential economic impact of this expanding industry as well as helping consumers and businesses to go green and save green. 
 
All Week-Operation Kid Equip School Supply Drive
Donate school supplies for southeastern Michigan’s children in need at these downtown locations: Northville Candle & Gifts (124 N. Center St.), Stampeddler Plus Memories (145 S. Center St.); Solid Grounds (133 W. Main St); Bee's Knees (149 E. Main St.); or Genitti’s (108 E. Main St.)
 
8AM – 9AM  Opening Ceremony
Buy Michigan Now founder Lisa Diggs, joined by special guests like State Representative Marc Corriveau, Mayor Christopher Johnson, Terry Bean of Blood, Sweat & Gear, Menachem Kniespeck of Operation Kid Equip, and others will make remarks and officially open the celebration. Look for some special surprises as well. Legendary BBQer Billy Bones has been smokin’ for over 30 years and he’s bringin’ the BBQ to Northville during the festival. (Gardenviews-202 W. Main)
 
9:00 AM – 11:00 AM  Tapping into Michigan Environmental Projects
The Environmental Management Association will host a panel discussion on upcoming projects happening in Michigan and opportunities available to local companies. Panelists scheduled to appear include: Dr. Oded Gur-Arie-Director of the Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies at Adrian College; Lori Ballard-Small Business Development Facilitator for the Wayne County Airport Authority; Patrick Zombo-Senior Environmental Planner, responsible for the Waste Management and waste minimization programs for Consumers Energy; Tom Begin-Community Relations East Regional Manager for Consumers Energy; and Rob Ferree-Principal-in-Charge at ARCADIS.  (Northville Square-133 West Main Street) 
 
10:00 AM – 5:00 PM  Michigan Businesses Expo Open
Vendors and exhibitors will be on hand to promote Michigan-made products and local services designed to help consumers and organizations to go green, and/or keep their money inside the state. (Northville Square-133 W. Main Street)
 
11:00 AM – 11:45 AM  Reducing Your Carbon Footprint with Carbon Credits
There is much talk about individual and organizational carbon footprints. This conversation, presented by Mark Devine of Carbon Credit Environmental Services, will define what is meant by a carbon footprint, why it matters, what a carbon credit is, and how it can help. (Northville Square-133 W. Main Street) 
 
Noon - 12:30PM  Tips for Going Green with Adam Helfman
Contracting expert and host of the radio show “Hire It Done!” which airs Saturday and Sunday mornings on WRIF and WMGC, shares tips on products that can help make your home more energy efficient. (Town Square on Main Street) 
 
12:45 PM – 1:15 PM The Trend Toward LEED Building
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an acronym that is becoming increasingly more common in building construction. Larry Crittenden of the U.S. Green Building Council will discuss what LEED certification is, sustainable building practices, and how certain elements of going green actually encourage buying locally. 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM  How Can an Energy Audit Help You?
Energy audits provide an expert’s perspective on how your home or business can reduce energy use and save money. This discussion will answer common questions. What is an energy audit? How is one scheduled? What should you expect? (Northville Square-133 W. Main)
 
3:00 PM – 4:00 PM  Green is the New Gold
Building on momentum created by MEDC commercials featuring Jeff Daniels that promote Michigan as the “Eco-Peninsula,” this panel discussion will center around the growth of the renewable energy field in Michigan. From solar panels and wind turbines being produced to the impact of the Renewable Portfolio Standard.  Scheduled panelists include: Chris Dejton of NextEnergy; Irene Dimitry, Director of Renewable Energy Strategy, DTE Energy; Chris Long, CEO, Global Wind Systems; and Vince Nystrom of Ann Arbor SPARK. 4:15 PM – 5:00 PM  Live One Shade Greener In this session, eco-friendly consultant, Lori Sullivan will give an overview of how to define a green lifestyle that is right for you.  Whether you are looking to lessen the environmental impact in your home or business, strategies will be reviewed that will help you discover the shade of green that fits you best.  Identify small steps you can take to be "one shade greener." 7:00PM – 9:00PM  Musician Justin Church performs (Solid Grounds Coffee Shop, Northville Square-133 W. Main)
 
School supply donations will be excepted at various locations throughout town all week to benefit Operation Kid Equip.
