Can everyone make a contribution toward improving Michigan's economy? Hiller's, a small chain of grocery stores in Southeastern Michigan, seems to think so, and naturally we agree.
Sidney Hiller introduced the company in 1941, and was committed to bringing quality and value to his customers. Back in those days, it was likely a little easier to find that combination in one's own backyard than it is now in our increasingly global economy. Yet, Jim Hiller, who is now at the helm, is dedicated to doing just that. Long known to be a supporter of other local businesses, he is now demonstrating that commitment on several levels through Michigan-oriented marketing efforts.
When asked why supporting the state in this manner was so important, Hiller said simply, "Because the bones of my ancestors and the future of my children depends upon the prosperity of Michigan."
Sharing a common spirit with supporters of Buy Michigan Now, Hiller's is working to make it easier for customers to keep more dollars inside of Michigan. Local products are highlighted by Made in Michigan shelf tags so that they stand out to shoppers. In an unusual, and provacotive twist, recent Hiller's ads forego many pictures of products in favor of information about how many Michigan residents are employed by each of the companies featured in the circular.
Their latest brainchild is designed to reward loyal customers with additional value, while promoting other Michigan businesses. Through the Hometown First Project, customers who spend $100 during a shopping trip to Hiller’s, automatically qualify for a Hometown First card. The card entitles the bearer to a one time discount at a participating restaurant, retailer, salon, fitness studio, or a variety of other local businesses.
The newest initiative geared toward helping consumers discover great local products, are the Michigan Foods Fairs. The first was hosted by Hiller's on March 21-22 in their Union Lake facility. More than 30 Michigan vendors were there to offer samples and answer questions about local products featured in the markets. The event was a rousing success and will be repeated again on May 2-3 in both the Ann Arbor and Commerce Township locations.
