It is common at this time of year for families to visit pumpkin patches and farmers’ markets all over the state in search of a special orange squash that is just the perfect shape and size to become their jack-o-lantern. For many, it is a hallowed family tradition.
Some of us plan to draw on them, while others will carve. Some will give them clothes, accessories, and names, while others relish in scooping out a home for a flickering candle. Whatever your style, it typically makes for a month of fun until the pumpkin’s inevitable demise. But on October 17th you can add to your tradition by picking out a pumpkin with your family that will last year after year. That’s the special opportunity afforded by a cool new event in Dearborn.
The Glass Academy in conjunction with Furnace Design Studio is opening its doors for their first ever Glass Pumpkin Fest & Sale. “This is not your typical fall pumpkin patch,” said Michelle Plucinsky, glass artist and co-owner of Furnace Design Studio. “There will be no real pumpkins for sale—rather an amazing array of one-of-a-kind sparkling glass pumpkins.”
Admission is free and attendees are invited to observe free glassblowing demonstrations, enjoy some Michigan cider, and participate in special prize drawings for custom-made glass pumpkins.
More than 500 hand-blown pumpkins will be on display, as well as other glass art, all hand-crafted by Michigan artists. Styles range from opaque to transparent and reflective to metallic. There will be pumpkins, glass leaves, and even festive bowls to show off those real gourds purchased from Michigan farmers. From one-of-a-kind collector’s items to a simple decorative piece to complete a table, you’ll have plenty from which to choose.
Whether you plan to buy, or just browse, it’s a unique way to spend an October afternoon, and to get first hand exposure to the miraculous art of glassblowing. As Plucinsky said, “It’s a great way to start a new tradition while sharing an experience with friends and family.”
